‘West Mercia Police Firearms Licencing Unit (FLU) are aware that the Department of Health & Social Care have directed that all NHS providers are to prioritise the COVID vaccine booster campaign and other services that mitigates the impact of the ongoing pandemic. In particular, General Practitioners (GP’s) have been asked to put non-emergency matters secondary to this important task. This is a totally understandable course of action.
As a result of this directive, we are already seeing cases where General Practitioners are declining or delaying the completion of the statutorily required medical forms from applicants of shotgun certificates and firearms licences. This will inevitably impact on our ability to process both new applications and renewals as medical verification is a mandatory part of the process that we must comply with.
It is important to note that we are able to accept medical reports completed by any General Medical Council registered General Practitioner, it does not have to be your own GP. Please can we urge everyone to consider the impact that the delay may cause to them personally.
West Mercia Police cannot impact upon or change the actions of the NHS, nor can we complete applications without all relevant information.
We are still open for business and accepting all applications.
Please can I take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.’
